Janie’s Shield Earrings
I first made these while re-reading Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I am struck by how often the following line is interpreted as the epitome of true love: "Janie looked down on him and felt a self-crushing love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place." I just can't see it that way and I made these shields for Janie. Made with Ashanti brass beads from Ghana and with dangles ranging from recycled glass to gemstone, these are medium size earrings designed to make you think.
