Janie’s Shield Earrings
For me moving forward means looking back and so I have brought back one of my first popular styles: Janie’s Shield. I first made these in 2018 when I was re-reading Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.I am struck by how this line is often interpreted: "Janie looked down on him and felt a self-crushing love. So her soul crawled out from its hiding place." How could this be understood as the epitome of true love? I just can't see it that way. As much as I love this book and Janie (its protagonist) and the legend who have us both, love shouldn’t be soul-crushing. All that to say— I made these earrings for Janie.
